Guidelines for describing outcomes and measures

Tell us who the project is for and give us an estimate of reach - numbers of participants, households, students, or other beneficiaries.

Be clear about what success looks like at the end of the project. Where possible, make outcomes measurable. We encourage you to follow the SMART goal criteria:

• Specific: Describe exactly what will happen and who will be involved. Avoid broad statements about change or impact.
• Measurable: Tell us how you will track progress and assess success. This might be numbers of participants, species counts, kilograms of waste diverted, or survey results - whatever is relevant to your project.
• Achievable: Be realistic about what your team can deliver within the project period and with the resources available. If you have a longer-term vision, focus your application on the next concrete step toward it.
• Relevant: Explain why this project matters now. Connect it to a specific need in your community or environment, and show how it contributes to your organisation’s wider goals.
• Time-bound: State when outcomes will be achieved. For longer projects, include milestones so we can see how the work will unfold.

For example

Instead of: “People will be more connected to their food.”
Try: “By the end of the project, 80 participants will have completed a composting course and received a starter kit to use at home.”
